I have found a mechanic near me now with that tool to do the injector service, but I can't find what cleaner is used (Toyota and Honda likely use proprietary cleaners). If you drive enough to keep your battery charged and use good fuel you shouldn't need that service before 80K or possible longer. Injectors were stuck (I could hear it with a stethoscope and see it on the fuel pressure gauge), so I had to remove the injectors and have them cleaned ultrasonically.Īt 40,000 miles you were likely duped. I tried to get that service here on my '07 Ranger with 80K miles, but couldn't find anyone with the correct tool. This is a very useful service if your injectors are sticking or clogged (usually from old or bad gasoline, or not driving enough). This requires a somewhat expensive tool with many different adapter fittings (looks like a can with a hose at the bottom and an air fitting and gauges at the top, the top screws off to fill). Likely the service you were charged for was an injector cleaning service where an injector cleaning solution (mixed with mostly gasoline) is injected into your fuel manifold under pressure from an external source. This does remove some carbon, but I am not convinced it is more than other methods. The oil change shops drips a type of carb cleaner into your intake via a vacuum line while the vehicle is idling on the other side of the paring lot. Toyota has a throttle cleaning service that includes cleaning the butterfly and around it for oil/carbon/dirt deposits that can jamb you throttle plate open just a bit and cause idle problems. Many shops don't know the difference (oil change places don't know). There are 2 types of fuel injector/ intake services performed. Instead, when I go to get my car repaired I have already researched any potential vehicle problems and know what has to be done and how much it will cost (fair price for parts and labor). I always take the stance of not believing what I am told by car repair shops and mechanics. Keep your eyes and ears open, learn whatever you can, and learn how to use an OBDII scanner and the internet to help diagnose problems. Keep in mind that modern vehicles are very reliable, and have warning systems in place that let you know when something is wrong. Read articles about car maintenance and watch YouTube videos. My recommendation is to learn as much as you can from this thread, talk about vehicle problems with friends, relatives, and anyone else who knows about vehicle maintenance. Many shops, including the dealerships, are looking for additional revenues from those who don't know any better. Modern fuels do an excellent job of keeping your fuel injectors clean. Click to expand.Unless you are having trouble with the engine running and they can prove without a shadow of doubt that it is due to plugged fuel injectors, don't let them do the fuel cleaner.
